ERDBEERE

The Erdbeere exhibition presents artwork from four artists based in Helsinki; Hanne Ivars, Antti Keitilä, Mikko Maasalo and Denise Ziegler.

Is the strawberry a vegetable after all?
The strawberry is an accessory fruit, which means the fleshy part is derived not from the ovaries but from the peg at the bottom of the hypanthia that holds the ovaries. So from a technical standpoint it could be said that the seeds are the actual fruits of the plant, and the flesh of the strawberry is a vegetable.

The works in the Erdbeere exhibition invites the viewers to reconsider their first impressions.

Rather than having a common theme, the exhibition shows samples from each artist’s production – four different approaches and working methods. Works exhibited are sculptures, photographs, paintings and animation.

Hanne Ivars: Good Will
– an installation with animation
The installation Good Will consists of two short animations and a built element, such as a shelter, that brings the animation world out and close to the audience. The world in the Good Will installation is twisted. On the one hand the message is sad but on the other hand the straightforwardness of the work gives the audience some relief. Anarchism is a word often used about the work. The point of interest lies in moral codes and ethics. As such the work has much in common with mythology, Christian mythology and fairy tales.

Antti Keitilä: Rotating Advertising Columns -series
The landscape reflection falling on the column’s curved glass and the advertisement on the column together constitute the artwork. The exposure length of about one second turns the rotating column’s advertisement into an abstract image with a still landscape superimposed on it.

Mikko Maasalo: Möksö -pieces
Working with light, sound, moving image, paintings, objects and situations created with them.

Denise Ziegler: Garden Activities – reconstructed situations
The works are traces of gestures, human activity, something that has happened. They refer to inconspicuous human activity or everyday things such as for example home plants. These situational reconstructions usually result in three-dimensional assemblages of objects, but also include drawings, paintings, videos or literary-visual works.

Welcome to the opening on Thursday, July 8 at 6 pm!
